Chocolate Kids' Mix

Ingredients

1 stick butter

1/2 cup peanut butter

1 cup chocolate chips

6 cups rice or corn cereal

3/4 cup cocoa powder

Directions

Melt butter, peanut butter and chocolate chips together. Stir in rice or corn cereal to coat. Put cocoa powder in paper bag or re-sealable plastic container. Add cereal and shake until cereal is covered with cocoa powder. Serve.

A Great Washingtonian Remembered

Washington, DC has lost a man that not only cared for the city, but contributed immensely to it.

Abe Pollin (December 3, 1923 – November 24, 2009) was the owner of a number of professional sports teams including the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League (NHL), the Washington Mystics in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), and the Washington Wizards in the National Basketball Association (NBA). Pollin was the longest-tenured owner of an NBA team, holding the Packers/Zephyrs/Bullets/Wizards franchise for 46 years. He was one of the most famous owners in professional sports history.

Pollin personally funded and built both the Capital Centre in Lanover, MD., and the Verizon Center formerly the MCI Center.

When the success of the Verizon Center brought much needed revitalization to the Chinatown area, it was common knowledge that Pollin declined to buy any of the surrounding land. He wanted other business owners to have an opportunity to share in the success his arena had brought.

He was a well known philanthopist, giving away scholarship money, supporting UNICEF, and feeding thousands of homeless people every year through his program "Abe's Table".

December 3rd, by order of the Mayor of Washington, DC, is Abe Pollin Day. A fitting honor for a man whose vision renewed the face of Washington, DC for the better.

Presidents Day

Washington's Birthday is the official name designated to what many of us know as President's Day. During the month of February the birthday of two of our greatest President's takes place. Both George Washington who was born on Feb. 22nd and Abraham Lincoln born on Feb. 12th.
However, Washington's birthday has been publicly celebrated since he was in office, before Abraham Lincoln was even born. Much of the debate over the name of the holiday springs from the fact that state's can follow their own holidays how they see fit and many of them chose to also honor Lincoln, calling the celebration President's Day.

It was in 1968 that the term President's Day came up for legal consideration in the Congress but was shot down, though the holiday was moved to fall between the two President's birthdays. Again in the 1980's there was a resurgence of the term with advertisers which solidfied the holiday name in American culture. Today, few Americans perfer to call the holiday Washington's Birthday in lieu of President's Day.

Just because the economy is in a slump doesn’t mean your Valentine’s Day has to be any less romantic. Here are my recession proof tips to enjoy your Valentine’s Day...and keep it real!

1. Indoor Picnic – Although it’s cold outside, keep things warm with an indoor picnic. Pack a basket with some of your mate’s favorite treats and toss a blanket on the floor and enjoy listening to tunes.
2. Stay in for dinner – pull out that special china you use when you have guests or only for the holidays and enjoy dinner for two.
3. Buy one rose (about $1 at any grocery, convenience store, or street vendor) and write your special
someone a love letter. Leave love notes all over the house (bathroom, kitchen) or write one and put it in their car or handbag/briefcase.

The day-long celebration features traditional Holiday entertainment and many children's activities as well as a wreath and bow making class. All of the activities are in Downtown Historic Purcellville, with walkable access to all of the events. In 2007 this was enjoyed by over 3,000 visitors and residents. Leesburg Parks and Recreation, in partnership with Loudoun Interfaith Relief, will be hosting the annual Freeze Your Gizzard Cross Country Run. The race will begin at 9:00am at the Gazebo in the front field of Ida Lee Park. The entry fee is $20.00 for the 5K, $10.00 for the 1 mile, plus 2 cans of food to be brought the day of the event. Canned food will be donated to Interfaith Relief’s food bank. All ages are welcome. Pre-register on-line at www.runwashington.com. Northern Virginia Brewfest

Almost four dozen American breweries are bringing their beers to Bull Run for the Northern Virginia BrewFest. You'll find microbrews and craft beers from all over the country, as well as Budweiser -- since, you know, you've probably never tried that. Skip the big guys that you can find at any bar (Sierra Nevada, Stella Artois, Hoegaarden) and enjoy use your tasting tickets on products from Lancaster Brewing Company, Oskar Blues, Bear Republic, Weeping Radish or Mendocino Brewing Company. A good number of Virginia breweries are represented, including Starr Hill, St. George and Old Richmond.

What exactly is a Plane Pull? All the various teams that are raising money for the Special Olympics compete to see who can pull a 150,000 lb. cargo plane the fastest in a 12 foot distance.

Making it easy on yourself
Often the key to glitch-free travel begins at home. It all starts with packing your bags. Some people prefer to pack light with just an over-the-shoulder duffel. Others prefer to check everything and walk on board with just a magazine. What works for one person might not work for another.

Carrying On
Can lower stress because you know everything is with you and you won’t be worried about lost luggage.
Can increase stress because you might be worried about the aircraft having enough space in the overhead bin. It can also be awkward and difficult to juggle your bag in the terminal area while shopping for food and drinks or using the restroom.

Checking Bags
Can lower stress because you don’t have to lug your bags around the terminal area. You are free to move around, go to the bathroom and get food or drink without the extra bulk of your bags.
Can increase stress because luggage sometimes gets routed incorrectly by the airline, leaving you without clothes or toiletries until your bags are recovered. Always be sure to remove old airline tags, to prevent lost luggage.

Combo Packing
It might be wise to consider carrying on a small bag with at least one change of clothes and minimal toiletries that you could not do without, including any medications. That way, should your checked luggage get lost, you would have the bare essentials with you.
Wrapped Gifts
It is best to keep any presents unwrapped and then wrap them once you arrive at your destination. If a wrapped gift is stopped by the security scanner, it will likely be unwrapped. Snowglobes and gifts like perfumes or lotions, wine or alcohol, and gourmet foods like salsas are not allowed to be carried on and must be placed in checked luggage. You might want to have gifts shipped ahead of time or place them in checked luggage. But be careful about packing anything valuable or of high sentimental value.

Fool-Proof Checklist
Did you know that your name on an airline ticket MUST match your name as it appears on your identification (driver’s license or passport)? If it doesn’t, it is possible you could be turned away by airport security.
It’s a good idea to carry certain things on your person or have them close at hand, including your airline e-ticket confirmation number/boarding pass, identification such as a driver’s license or passport, hotel & rental car confirmations, credit cards and address or appointment books. Pick a single pocket on your briefcase or carry-on and commit to keeping these important, frequently used documents there. That way you always know where to find them.
Allow time for parking. You might wind up in a parking lot that requires a shuttle to the airport. The best alternative is to have a friend or relative drop you off and pick you up.
You aren’t allowed to enter security with a beverage brought from home or purchased before reaching the security checkpoint unless it is under three ounces or smaller. But for those of you who don’t like to be separated from your coffee or soda, you can purchase a beverage of any size after security screening and take it with you on board.
How many times have you seen all black bags coming around the baggage claim carousel? To avoid confusion, tie a brightly colored ribbon to a black bag so you can easily spot your luggage. Or buy a bold luggage tag that will set yours apart.
Catching the first flight available is a wise choice. The later you fly, the more common it is to get caught in the day’s delays. Also, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are typically the lightest travel days.
Try not to book tight connections. Give yourself ample strolling time between flights and fill that space with a good book or snack. And if you’re traveling with small kids, a non-stop flight isn’t necessarily better. Sometimes a break between flights is what kids need.

Dulles Day Festival and Plane Pull

An entire festival has grown up around the competition, and features a wide range of events and activities for the entire family. There’s even a School Bus Pull for the kids… so gather your friends and family and make a day of it!

What IS the actual Plane Pull?
The pull is a fun team competition to see which group can pull a cargo jet the fastest. Teams are made up of 20 members, who all line up adjacent to a huge rope attached to the aircraft. The starter signals when to start and starts the stopwatch. After the team pulls the aircraft 12 feet, the stopwatch stops and the elapsed time is recorded as the team score. Each team is then weighed (as a group) and assembles to have their team photo taken.
